A horrifying scene unfolded at the Fulton Street subway station in Manhattan this past Saturday, when a woman was allegedly pushed onto the tracks by her boyfriend and struck by an oncoming train. The vicious attack resulted in the amputation of the woman's both feet, as confirmed by police sources. According to 6abc, the 29-year-old was shoved during a heated argument with her partner.
NYPD officers, who responded to the station shortly before 10:30 a.m., found the victim conscious and responsive despite her devastating injuries. As reported by NDTV, Christian Valdez, the suspected boyfriend, initially fled the scene, but was later apprehended around 9:35 p.m. in Brooklyn. Valdez now faces charges of attempted murder and felony assault. A witness, who remained by the woman's side until help arrived, recounted her strength and distress, "She said something to the effect that she didn't deserve this," as he recalled to NDTV.
This brutal act of violence comes amid increased safety concerns within New York City's subway system. Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced the deployment of New York National Guard troops and state police, complementing the already 1,000-strong NYPD force patrolling the transit system, as 6abc informs us.
On the same day as the subway attack, another unrelated tragedy occurred when a man was fatally struck by a train in midtown Manhattan, according to NBC New York. The two incidents, stark reminders of the dangers lurking in the city's underground arteries, have not been connected. However, the timing of both incidents further underscores the ongoing battle against crime in the subway system, a struggle that Governor Hochul, vows to address with a considerable surge in security presence.
