A fatal exchange of gunfire shattered the relative peace of a Phoenix neighborhood on Monday afternoon, according to authorities. The incident occurred at an apartment complex near 45th Avenue and Thomas Road, where police discovered one teenage boy dead, a wounded girl, and the suspect injured. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the suspect, who has not yet been identified, confronted 17-year-old Arlandis West Jr. over a disagreement that escalated into a deadly confrontation.
With reports of the shooting coming in around 2:15 p.m., Phoenix police swiftly responded to the scene. On arrival, officers located a man in the complex with a serious gunshot wound, later identified as the suspect. He was transported to a hospital, where he is now in critical but stable condition. Inside the apartment, they found West Jr. and the unnamed teenage girl suffering from gunshot wounds. West Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene, while the girl was taken for medical attention and is expected to survive, according to a statement provided to ABC15.
Police say that the violent encounter began with the suspect confronting West Jr., leading to a physical altercation before the gunfire erupted. The investigation so far suggests a disagreement spiraled out of control, resulting in the three individuals being shot. Law enforcement is still piecing together the details of what motivated the confrontation and the subsequent shooting.
Authorities have indicated that once the suspect recovers, he will face multiple charges and be booked into jail. Phoenix police officers, working diligently to understand the sequence of events, are yet to determine if the bullet that wounded the girl came from the suspect or the other victim, dead at the scene. The incident remains under active investigation with no new details being shared with the public as of yet.
