The legal battle over the role of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in the Georgia election interference case presses onward as a judge has granted former President Donald Trump and other defendants the opportunity to appeal a decision that could remove Willis from her position.
Trump's legal woes continue, as the Georgia Court of Appeals is set to make a call on whether to hear the appeal – an appeal sprung from concerns over Willis' alleged conflict of interest due to a romantic tie with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, WABE reports. Fulton Superior Judge Scott McAfee upheld Willis' role in the case but mandated Wade's resignation, to which he complied within hours. Yet, Trump's team insists this move doesn't quite cut it.
According to a ruling by Judge McAfee on Friday, Willis staying on hinges on Wade walking away; nevertheless, Trump's attorneys protest that this resolution falls short. Their stance is the issue with Willis is a question, "of such importance to the case that immediate review should be had," a sentiment validated by McAfee when he referenced Georgia law in his decision.
Undeterred by potential delays, McAfee has vowed to keep the case moving "whether or not the appeals court decides to revisit his ruling." On deck are Trump and 14 others who stand not guilty of charges alleging they had a hand in tampering with Georgia's 2020 election results, yet no trial date awaits on the horizon, according to the report by WABE.
The courtroom drama ratchets up as four others have already pleaded guilty in the case, separate from Trump and his cohort's maintained plea of innocence. As for when the gavel will sound to start the trial – that remains an open question, leaving the former president and others to hold their breath, as the wheels of justice slowly grind forward.
