Tragedy struck the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw neighborhood on Saturday afternoon when a violent multi-vehicle collision claimed the lives of two individuals. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the incident, which involved a Mercedes flipping onto its roof, occurred on the 5000 block of West Coliseum Street around 2:56 p.m.
Local residents have expressed concerns about the safety of this particular intersection, with one local driver Robert Hunt noting to CBS Los Angeles, "Just yesterday, I was saying to my wife that someone is going to get killed at this intersection." The severity of the collision was evident, as it not only resulted in fatalities but also a significant disruption to traffic while authorities conducted their investigations.
Eye-witnesses and first responders were confronted with a harrowing scene. The Los Angeles Police Department told FOX LA that a Mercedes Benz was speeding north on La Brea Avenue when it struck a vehicle in the left turn lane, before flipping and colliding with at least two other cars. Parts of the Mercedes were strewn across the intersection, painting a violent tableau of the crash's impact.
In the aftermath, the Los Angeles Fire Department's Brian Humphrey announced that both the driver and passenger in the Mercedes were declared dead at the scene. No one else was transported to the hospital, as per LAFD. This accident underscores long-standing community concerns about the intersection's safety. Bob Hunt reemphasized his sentiments to FOX LA about the prevalence of high-speed traffic and the urgent need for preventative measures in the area.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to this fatal encounter. Meanwhile, local police acknowledge the propensity for speeding at this downhill stretch of road, as Sgt. Clarence Perkins shared with FOX LA, "We actually shoot laser up here and try to slow them down, but we were not here."
