Two people ended up in the hospital late Monday after the car they were in veered out of control and violently crashed into a Pomona medical building, authorities say. The accident, which occurred shortly after 11 p.m. near East Artesia Street, saw the vehicle careen off the road following an exit from the 10 Freeway, ultimately slamming into the structure and flipping upside down. KTLA reported that emergency responders rushed to the scene where they found the car in flames after the collision which happened on a stretch housing Artesia Medical Pharmacy among other medical offices.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Garcia's statement obtained by KTLA, the rescue team pulled two individuals from the wreckage before they were transported to the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, their conditions yet unrevealed; meanwhile, CHP told NBCLA, the car appeared to have blasted through an intersection and leaped a curb which preceded the violent impact with the medical facility's wall.
Initial investigations into the events leading up to the crash point to the possibility of high speed playing a role. CHP disclosed to NBCLA that the driver seemed to have been speeding down the westbound 10 Freeway when they struck a 'Do Not Enter' sign just off the freeway before the crash. The actual cause of the incident, including factors such as speed or alcohol use, remains officially undetermined and under investigation.
As it stands, the aftermath of the collision still hangs in a hazed balance; the health status of the victims ensnared in this unexpected twist of fate alongside a road meant for safe passage, their stories, for now, woven only into the taut silence of a city's night now disrupted - these details are yet to unfurl as authorities piece together the charred fragments of a Monday night that ended with the crumpling of metal and the blare of sirens.
