Austin, Texas has become a ground zero for the convergence of technology and military innovation at this year’s South By Southwest (SXSW) festival. The event introduced audiences to tools purported to advance U.S. military defenses, including next-gen drones and multilingual AI-driven translation systems. The showcase was a segment of the wider ambit of activities sponsored by the U.S. Army, which seeks to modernize its arsenal while rubbing shoulders with tech innovators and industry leaders.

At an event hosted by the Mission Acceleration Network (MAC), a grassroots organization, attendees saw firsthand the capabilities of advanced drones and AI technology designed for military applications. Denise Ryser, the Executive Director of MAC, emphasized the organization's goal to connect innovators with battlefield operatives to "solve that [communication and operational] problems," according to a KVUE. The Army, as a major SXSW sponsor, highlighted the importance of this technology in maintaining a cutting-edge defense.

Lilt’s Vice President of Growth, Allison Yarborough, conveyed to the KVUE the significance of the company's AI translation model. “Agencies within the U.S. that are working on a global scale, they have a very hard time translating the volume of information that they process in foreign languages,” she explained. The translation tool developed by Lilt is already under the Department of Defense’s purview, ensuring the AI only learns what is necessary under a “minimal level of control,” as reported by KVUE.

However, the military's presence at the festival has sparked some backlash. Demonstrators protesting at the event voiced their concerns by chanting phrases like "Free Palestine," holding SXSW partly responsible for accepting sponsorship from the Army and indirectly the defense contractors supplying to nations like Israel. Stars and Stripes noted that amidst this tension, the Army celebrated its involvement at SXSW, providing attendees with experiences ranging from live music performances by Army bands to participatory activities like the Army Combat Fitness Test. “We're proud to be a sponsor of SXSW, and to have the opportunity to showcase America’s Army,” said Ellen Lovett, an Army spokeswoman, in a statement provided to Stars and Stripes.
