A suspect with multiple violent felony warrants led to an officer-involved shooting incident in Warren, Michigan, outside a Days Inn hotel on Friday. According to CBS News Detroit, three members of the U.S. Marshal Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team (DFAT) tried to arrest a man when he suddenly attempted to escape by driving away, dragging the officers with his vehicle. Despite shots being fired by one of the marshals, no one was injured by gunfire.
As stated by FOX 2 Detroit, the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Carl Emerson Travis, was seen on video running from officers before getting into his Mercedes and reversing, dragging the marshals, and colliding with a room at the inn that had two children inside. In an eventful turn of events, not a single bystander was hurt, and Travis was apprehended.
The attempted arrest occurred around 11 a.m. near 14 Mile Rd. and Van Dyke as the DFAT team was taking action on the active warrants against the suspect. The Michigan State Police disclosed that three team members sustained rash injuries from the incident, but they are all expected to make a full recovery, as detailed by WWJ Newsradio 950.
Travis has a troubled history with law enforcement, including a 26-mile police chase in August 2022 following an alleged assault on his ex-wife. In an attempt to flee the police, he crashed his vehicle and was later captured after trying to run even following a taser deployment. "His ex-wife had a personal protection order against him," FOX 2 Detroit reported. He had posted a $25,000 bond after being charged with six felonies but failed to appear in court subsequently.
Investigations into the Warren officer-involved shooting are currently underway by detectives from the MSP Second District, Special Investigation Section. The results of the investigation will later be reviewed by the prosecutor’s office. Meanwhile, the suspect remains in custody, with further legal proceedings pending.
