The University of Texas at Austin is rolling back its pandemic-era admissions policy and will require standardized test scores for applicants aiming to enroll in fall 2025. The decision follows a suspension of the requirement in 2020 due to limited testing opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic. UT Austin's announcement comes amid a trend of universities moving away from test-optional admissions. The university experienced a surge in applications last year, receiving about 73,000 applications, as per the statement, as reported by KXAN.

In response to critics who argue that standardized testing can perpetuate inequalities, UT Austin insists that such assessments are critical in properly measuring a student's potential success in postsecondary education. UT Austin President Jay Hartzell supported the move by stating, "Our experience during the test-optional period reinforced that standardized testing is a valuable tool for deciding who is admitted and making sure those students are placed in majors that are the best fit," in a statement obtained by the Texas Tribune. College Board data showed that most of last year's applicants took standardized exams regardless of the waived requirement.

Besides reinstating SAT and ACT requirements, UT Austin is also introducing a new application process aimed at strengthening the holistic review to build a more successful class. Some of the modifications include the inception of an Early Action program, amendments to the required essay to offer greater flexibility and the reduction of short answer responses. Moreover, the university announced the implementation of a waitlist for certain applicants and advised future students to source letters of recommendation from individuals outside their high schools, as per KXAN.

Joining the ranks of elite universities like MIT, Yale, and Dartmouth, UT Austin marks the latest institution to reverse test-optional policies. The move underscores the ongoing debate over the fairness and utility of standardized tests in college admissions. The university assures that a holistic admissions review will continue, but standardized tests will now play a crucial role in matching students to their preferred majors and identifying those who may benefit most from student success programs, an approach that appears to firmly integrate test scores into the fabric of higher education once again.
