Vice President Kamala Harris is set to host Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo at the White House on March 25, a meeting designed to fortify the bonds between the two nations and push forward initiatives aimed at tackling the root causes of migration. A statement from the office of Communications Director Kirsten Allen, the gathering highlights America's support for good governance and democratic values in Guatemala, following Arévalo's recent inauguration in January of this year, according to The White House.
The meeting aims to reinforce the partnership between the US and Guatemala by promoting development and democracy; Harris and Arévalo are slated to discuss enhanced cooperation to combat the factors driving irregular migration from northern Central America, as per The White House. Their agenda is set to cover critical issues such as civilian security, governance, human rights, labor protections, gender-based violence, and economic opportunities, all pivotal to establishing stability and curbing the incentive for migration.
Part of the engagement will see Vice President Harris calling upon leaders from different sectors, including government, private, and civil society entities, in a bid to push Central America Forward. This effort links to the Biden-Harris Administration's Root Causes Strategy and has already netted substantial financial commitments exceeding $4 billion, aiming to encourage private sector investment in the region, spawn jobs, and bolster economic stability, as reported by The White House.
