A District man got slapped with enhanced theft charges for a CVS heist in Adams Morgan, authorities said Thursday.

Travon Carter, 31, was hit with a felony second-degree theft indictment by a grand jury in the DC Superior Court and MPD Chief Pamela Smith, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia. With a rap sheet that includes more than two prior theft convictions, Carter could face stiffer penalties, like mandatory minimum jail time.

The government claims that on February 27, Carter strolled into the CVS at 1781 Florida Avenue NW and allegedly walked out with a stash of unpaid merchandise. His past convictions are not off the hook, as they've paved the way for the heightened charge he's now facing. Carter is scheduled for an arraignment come April 4th.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has been on a crackdown, having brought 36 similar indictments, since September 1 last year, all for suspects like Carter, who had two or more prior theft convictions, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia. Washington's finest at the Metro PD dug into the case before passing the baton to Graves' team for prosecution by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Wessel.

The gears of justice are turning for Carter, and authorities hope the toughened charge sends a clear message to would-be thieves considering a five-finger discount at their local retailer.
