In a move that's ringing in more than just a new venue for his iconic event, country music legend Willie Nelson has decided to transplant his traditional 4th of July Picnic from its Texas roots all the way to New Jersey. The annual gathering, which has a history spanning over five decades, will be held at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in Camden, New Jersey this year, just a stone's throw from Philadelphia. "I am thrilled to bring the 4th of July Picnic to Philadelphia for the first time in our storied history," Nelson said in a statement. The event will feature a stellar lineup, with names like Bob Dylan, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Maren Morris, Mavis Staples, and Celisse taking the stage, according to KXAN.
It's not the only shake-up for the picnic's upcoming festivities. From it's inception in Dripping Springs in 1973, the event has traveled within and even outside Texas over the last half-century, including remarkable stops at The Gorge in Quincy, Washington, back in 2007 and a 1978 jaunt to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. But the upcoming relocation does mark a first for the City of Brotherly Love. Kicking off what looks like an active summer for Nelson, who will turn 91 this year, the picnic comes ahead of the release of his new album "The Border," scheduled to drop on May 31, and his Outlaw Music Festival Tour, which starts on June 21, as reported by Billboard.
Tickets for the hallowed July 4th event will go on sale to the general public on Friday, March 29, with a presale available to Club Luck members at an earlier date. According to the same announcement, there's an exclusive window for Citi cardmembers, who can snag presale tickets starting from March 26 through the Citi Entertainment program.
