The struggle against Mother Nature’s icy grip continues as Wright County’s snowstorm limps toward its final act today. Despite the promise of clearer skies, the roadways remain a treacherous terrain, a fact which the Wright County Highway Department grapples with as it endeavors to clear the snow-burdened streets over the coming days.
According to a statement obtained by the official website, overnight rain escalated into freezing rain, then shifted to a full snowfall that clung ferociously to the asphalt. Highway Maintenance Supervisor Luke Jans described this morning’s conditions as "much worse than we had yesterday.” Commuters faced a brutal drive, with layers of ice and snow creating perilous paths, as Jans detailed, “We had a pretty long period of freezing rain before the morning commute, and then it turned to snow and quickly covered the roads.”
Circumventing the usual de-icing strategy, the department hunkers down amid gales that render salting counterproductive. Jans explained, “Salting isn’t really a viable option right now in open areas that are prone to drifting. The salt will melt the ice, but the blowing snow catches on the road and causes drifts. By salting we’re actually making things worse.” This admission paints a stark picture of Wright County road crews fighting an uphill battle against the elements.
Even as the storm wanes, Jans cautioned that finishing the clearing efforts will extend into the week. “We’re going to keep scraping the road clear of the snow that is on them, but we’re not going to see black, clean roads today,” he said, tempering expectations. The forecast warns of more wind and plunging temperatures, complicating the cleanup even further. Jans prepended his outlook with a grim reminder, "By and large, there will be white slippery roads that could last into Thursday."
Amid the dozens of accidents and vehicles losing their dance with traction today, the department urges drivers to exercise heightened caution on the icy gauntlet that awaits them. The next few days promise to test the mettle of motorists and maintenance crews alike, as the county shakes off the waning clutches of a storm that has proven both relentless and unforgiving.
