In a tragic turn of events, the peaceful night in Oak Park, San Diego, was shattered by the sound of gunfire, culminating in the death of a young man. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has confirmed that on the night of March 28, they received a distress call circa 10:54 p.m. about a vehicle accident at the corner of 60th and Michael Streets. The dispatch led both police and San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel to a grisly scene: a car that had collided with a fence and an unresponsive driver.
According to the official SDPD announcement, emergency responders initially thought they were handling a simple car crash. However, the investigation quickly took a grim turn upon discovering the driver, a 25-year-old Hispanic male, with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Paramedics fought to save the man's life at the scene before swiftly transporting him to a local hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 11:42 p.m., not even an hour after being found.
This incident has now sparked a homicide investigation. Preliminary findings by homicide detectives suggest that the victim may have been involved in a verbal altercation with two other males shortly before being shot and crashing his vehicle. The suspects, described as potentially Hispanic, remain at large. Detectives are working to possibly track down any witnesses or surveillance footage that may have caught the fatal confrontation or could provide further details to aid in solving the case.
Authorities have withheld the identity of the victim pending family notification. The SDPD actively appeals to the public for information regarding this tragic incident. They urge anyone with knowledge that could lead to the apprehension and conviction of those responsible to step forward. The Homicide Unit can be contacted at (619) 531-2293, or anonymous tips can be directed to Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
