Zoo Atlanta is in mourning after the sudden death of Ruby, one of its female red pandas, which left zookeepers and visitors heartbroken. Officials discovered Ruby deceased on Friday, with preliminary findings suggesting a mesenteric torsion, a critical condition where the intestines twist, as the likely cause. This devastating event has cast a shadow over the zoo wherein her care team found her, reported FOX 5 Atlanta.
"This is a devastating loss for Zoo Atlanta, our thoughts are with Ruby’s care team who, like all of the Animal Care Teams at Zoo Atlanta, are deeply committed to the animals and devote each day to their superior care and well-being," Sam Rivera, the zoo's vice president of animal health, conveyed the somber news to the public. Further insight into the cause of death is expected to be provided by a comprehensive pathology report. Ruby along with her sister, Rose, had been transplanted to Zoo Atlanta from Knoxville in February 2023 as part of an effort to maintain genetic diversity within the species, something noted by 11Alive.
While sharing a name with the more commonly known giant panda, red pandas are significantly smaller and bear a closer resemblance to raccoons than to their larger distant relatives. Native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China, the red panda is considered endangered due to habitat loss and other environmental pressures. Zoo Atlanta is recognized for housing the Himalayan subspecies, which includes Ruby and her sister. Their presence in Atlanta has been part of a global conversation about conservation and the effort to save endangered species.
As for the zoo community, losing an animal such as Ruby means more than statistics and biological preservation, it means losing a family member. "While it is too early for us to presume on any specific cause, we are hopeful that pathology report results will tell us more about Ruby’s condition,” Rivera detailed in the face of this loss, according to statements obtained by both FOX 5 Atlanta and 11Alive. With the pathology report pending, the staff and the followers of the pandas' stories await answers, hoping for closure and understanding of the circumstances leading to the untimely departure of Ruby.
