Adventure season is officially back on the map in Arizona's White Mountains, as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) gears up to reopen key state routes after their winter hibernation. Warm temperatures have chased away the winter snows, giving ADOT the green light to quickly reinstate access to popular highland attractions starting April 17.

The list includes the scenic State Route 261, stretching from Eagar to Big Lake; State Route 273 linking Sunrise Park to Big Lake; and State Route 473 which leads adventurers from State Route 260 right up to Hawley Lake. These routes are essential to truly experience the White Mountains, and their seasonal closures are as sure as winter itself, a necessary move to ensure public safety amidst heavy snowfall. According to ADOT's announcement, the roadways get annually shuttered as part of the agency's winter protocol.

These reopenings are not just about reconnecting roads – they are a signpost of renewal, providing a cleared path for nature enthusiasts to once again immerse themselves in the tranquil embrace of the White Mountains. The mountains beckon hikers, fishers, and campers alike, with their wild, undulating landscapes and sparkling lakes – treasures that, for months, have lain dormant beneath a blanket of snow.

For those setting their sights a bit further off the beaten track, ADOT has also announced that State Route 67, the path leading to wonder that is the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park, is slated to reopen in mid-May alongside the park facilities. The Grand Canyon, a pinnacle of natural splendor, will soon be ready to welcome eager visitors after its own snow-induced slumber, its majesty waiting to be rediscovered with the advent of spring.
