In a touching commemoration, family and friends convened on Sunday to honor the memory of 16-year-old Bryce Brooks from Atlanta, who tragically passed away a year ago while attempting to rescue children caught in a rip current. Bryce Brooks, who was on a spring break trip with his family to Pensacola, Florida, sprung into action upon seeing the children struggling in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, FOX 5 reported.
In an emotional tribute, his parents and public figures spoke to his heroism. "Our children witnessed four other kids who they did not know being pulled by the current further out to the sea," Bryce's father Shivy Brooks told FOX 5. Unpacking the vacation bags since that fateful day still hasn't been done by the grieving family.
During the incident last year, Shivy watched Bryce and two other boys go into the water to help the drowning children. As Bryce struggled against the current himself, he called for help—not for himself, but for the little kids he was trying to rescue. Sadly, the teen was overcome by the water and did not survive. A close family friend, Charles Johnson II, also lost his life trying to save the teen. Both were pulled from the water by strangers and later pronounced dead at the hospital. In tribute to their son's bravery, the Brooks family has since established the Bryce Brooks Foundation, aimed at providing swim lessons and CPR training to young people, according to statements from the family.
The community's response to the tragedy included a balloon release at Maynard Jackson High School, with family, friends, and the broader community, as Bryce's mother, Crystal Brooks, remarked, "We're never gonna get to see Bryce grow up to be the full man that he was going to be," she said, as per a statement obtained by FOX 5. His phone from that day is still unturned by the family. Bearing witness to this display of love and remembrance, Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat told a large crowd, “I get to see every day the worst of Atlanta and Fulton County has to offer. But this is the best of what you all brought to us,” as reported by Atlanta News First.
Through these efforts and the heartfelt remembrances, Bryce's legacy is one characterized by altruism and courage, qualities immortalized by those he left behind. “Heroes don’t deserve to ever die," Alfred said, echoing a sentiment that has resonated deeply within the Atlanta community, a clear reflection of Bryce's lasting impact—a young life marked by selfless heroism and inspiring action.
