Last night, Mayor Andre Dickens officially marked the launch of a significant new chapter in Atlanta's "Light Up the Night" initiative, a citywide project intended to enhance public safety and reduce crime through widespread lighting installations. Joined by Georgia Power CEO Kim Green, Dickens touted the successes of their joint effort that has already seen over 10,000 LED lights installed, repaired, and upgraded across the city.

The event, bathed in the fresh glow of new streetlights in Old Adamsville, was a platform for both the Mayor and Georgia Power to also to ambitively set the stage for the next leg in their partnership. According to a city press release, an additional 20,000 lights are earmarked for installation and upgrades across Atlanta, pushing forward a vision of a city less cloaked in the vulnerabilities of darkness.

Mayor Dickens, speaking at the Old Adamsville Recreation Center, expressed optimism about the impact of lighting on public safety. "We've seen a decrease in night-time crime rates in neighborhoods where the new LED lights have been installed," he mentioned, indicating a practical benefit to the project that extends beyond aesthetics.

Kim Green, CEO of Georgia Power, also weighed in on the collaboration with the city. "Our goal is to not just to brightly illuminate Atlanta, but to enhance the sense of community and safety for all its residents," said Green. With the aim of realizing a city alight with hope and less shadowed by crime, this public-private partnership continues to push firmly forward.

The "Light Up the Night" expansion starts in Old Adamsville, but it will soon spread its beams throughout Atlanta. This ambition aligns with Mayor Dickens’ broader plans to foster a city infused with both light and heightened security.
