A Stone Mountain man has been sentenced to spend the rest of his days behind bars without the possibility of parole for the brutal killing of a young woman who was found in the smoldering remains of a car. Gerald Jerome Clark, 44, was handed life in prison plus an additional 25 years after a DeKalb County jury delivered a guilty verdict last week on numerous charges, including malice murder and arson, as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta.
Court records reveal that Mary Kilpatrick's life was violently taken in September 2020. Her body was discovered on the 26th, inside a car trunk on Fieldgreen Circle after a fire that fire personnel had to quickly extinguish. An autopsy later confirmed the chilling detail that Kilpatrick was still alive when the fire was intentionally set. Witnesses had previously heard someone banging from inside the trunk and confronted Clark, who escalated the situation by drawing a firearm and aiming it at the very space where the victim was trapped, according to details obtained by WSB-TV.
The case, which unfolded over the past few years, painted a grave picture of the events leading up to Kilpatrick's death. Clark's actions included driving Kilpatrick's car, where she was already confined in the trunk, to a friend's place, where the ominous sounds of her trying to escape were first noticed. It was there that Clark threatened to shoot her through the trunk, only to be stopped by the intervention of a witness.
Following the confrontation, Clark sought the help of his cousin, unwittingly enlisting him to acquire gasoline for what seemed like an innocent purpose, concealing the darker intent. With the gas in hand, Clark briefly stopped to fire shots into the trunk, possibly aiming to silence his prisoner permanently. He then drove to Fieldgreen Circle, doused the car with fuel, and heartlessly set it on fire. Investigators reconstructed Kilpatrick's final moments, leading to the substantial sentence for Clark, as reported by WSB-TV.
