Rockwall, Texas is set to host a new $160 million manufacturing plant courtesy of Ballard Power Systems, the company focuses on fuel cell products and it's getting a hefty push from Uncle Sam with $40 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy according to reports by the Dallas Express. The Rockwall Giga 1 plant will sprawl over 22 acres in the Rockwall Technology Park, set to churn out millions of fuel-cell-related components annually—ballpark figures sounding off at 8 million membrane electrode assemblies, 8 million bipolar plates, 20,000 fuel cell stacks, and the same number of fuel cell engines, adding up to a whopping 3 gigawatts total capacity.
The plant's not just a factory but a beacon of potential expansion with BPS eyeballing possible growth down the line, the Dallas Business Journal noted, a decision on the cards for later in the year, Randy MacEwen, Ballard's big boss sang Rockwall's praises as an ideal backdrop for the high-tech hustle and bustle, famed for logistics superiority and shovel-ready sites tailor-made for such endeavors as forging the future of fuel cells in America.
Rockwall's Economic Development Corporation's head honcho Phil Wagner told the Dallas Express, “We are thrilled that Ballard chose Rockwall, Texas, for this transformative project," with Wagner foreseeing big things in Ballard's bet on Rockwall, including flowing funds to bolster city, county, and school district coffers. Partnerships are afoot with BPS's commitment to Rockwall's growth on Wagner's radar.
Local stakeholders have much to celebrate as BPS Chief Transformation Officer Dr. Lee Sweetland committed to the art of advanced manufacturing processes that meet the demands of tomorrow while chasing cost cuts; BPS actions are in the spotlight as America's highways to hydrogens could see major advancements with this clean energy move, MacEwen expressed his gratitude towards the DOE support which fuels the Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis, Manufacturing and Recycling Program, hoping to steer U.S. capabilities in a cleaner, brighter direction, this according to the Dallas Business Journal.
Additional details about the plant which also emerged from a WFAA report include that Ballard's Rockwall facility is slated to become a fuel cell component-producing powerhouse by the millions—a strong stride for energy innovation in the heart of Texas.
