In an effort to foster community and support for individuals with special needs, the Boston Police Department (BPD) teamed up with Special Olympics this Autism Awareness Month, to create a sensory-friendly swimming event at the Kroc Center.

The initiative, which took place in Roxbury's District B-2, saw police officers engaging with participants, providing encouragement, as they took to the pool. Amidst the splashing and strokes of determined swimmers, the atmosphere at the event was one of inclusion and joy. "We continue to try and connect special needs families with needed resources for swimming, and various kinds of activities in our community," BPD stated in an announcement of the event.

The event is seen as a positive step by many, demonstrating the police department's commitment to serving all facets of the Boston community. Sensory swims are tailored to be less overwhelming in terms of noise and visual stimuli, creating a safe space for individuals with autism, who can sometimes find public pools to be too chaotic or overstimulating for comfort.
