A man was shot by a sheriff's deputy on Wednesday in northwest Harris County after allegedly attempting to break into a neighbor's home and then lunging at deputies with a knife, officials said. The suspect, a 61-year-old man, reportedly was involved in a "weapons disturbance" on Braydon Bend Drive, as stated in posts by Sheriff Ed Gonzalez on X, previously known as Twitter.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office said the deputies were responding to the scene around noon when they encountered the suspect who had returned to his own residence after the alleged burglary attempt. The man barricaded himself inside a bathroom, per reports from abc13. A resident, who lives with the suspect but was not present during the incident, had given the deputies consent to enter the home.
The standoff ended when the suspect emerged from the bathroom wielding a knife and "charged toward a deputy," prompting the law enforcement officer to fire his weapon, striking the individual in the torso, as mentioned by the Harris County Sheriff's Office's Assistant Chief Tommy Diaz. The injured man was airlifted to a hospital, landing in serious condition as reported by click2houston.com. No deputies were harmed in the exchange, and there were no further threats to the community.
Assistant Chief Tommy Diaz revealed during a press conference that the deputies had been called to the home 54 times this year for various disturbances ranging from mental health episodes to aggravated assaults. Some of the calls had been made by the suspect himself, who claimed others' lives were in danger, according to the details provided by abc13. The 38-year-old deputy involved in the shooting is a 12-year veteran of the sheriff's office.
This incident is part of a string of recent shootings involving law enforcement in the area. On Tuesday, Houston police officers shot two suspects at Taqueria Ruby, and in a separate incident, two Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies killed an armed suspect after a car chase, as shared by Sheriff Gonzalez. With investigations ongoing, the recent spate of violence has highlighted the turbulent encounters between individuals and law enforcement in the region, as FOX 26 Houston reported.
