East Knoxville Equity Task Force Launches Grants for Education and Wealth CreationSource: Google Street View

In a bid to address historical inequities and breathe new life into East Knoxville, the African American Equity Restoration Task Force has put forth a grant program designed to enrich the community through education, engagement, homeownership, entrepreneurship, and employment opportunities. Local non-profits and community-driven organizations are now eligible to apply for funding up to $25,000. These grants aim to bolster programs that align with the Strategic Framework set out by the Task Force in late 2023.

According to a statement obtained by KnoxvilleTN.gov, "These areas are essential pillars in restoring access to opportunities, resources, financial stability and sustainability," Tanisha Fitzgerald-Baker, chair of the Task Force, emphasized. The grants are projected to support educational programs for African American youth, provide workforce development, support small business growth and, increase home ownership opportunities.

The initiative underscores a concerted effort to mend the fabric of a community historically marginalized by offering a solid foundation for wealth creation and equity. The Task Force, which stems from a City Council resolution back in 2020, systematically addresses long-standing disparities through policy and program recommendations, collaborating with local institutions.

The grant application period is already underway, with a deadline of May 10, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. for submission via mail, email, or in person. For those who seek a preliminary review of their applications, the cutoff is May 3, 2024, also by 4:30 p.m. The City’s Office of Community Safety and Empowerment will oversee the grant process, providing the necessary administrative support. As the Task Force continues its monthly meetings, the focus remains steadfastly on constructive outcomes and strategic community upliftment.
