East Tennessee is rallying together in the face of destruction following an EF1 tornado that hit Sunbright, leaving the community to pick up the pieces. Volunteers and first responders have been tirelessly working to address the urgent needs presented by the recent natural disaster.

On the ground, neighbor is helping neighbor, as the small town of Sunbright experiences a surge of community spirit. Ben Hicks, a local resident, expressed his relief to WATE, revealing that he and his family took refuge in a closet praying for safety during the storm. Hicks said, "We went into the closet and we were just praying it would pass over us, and thank God it did not hurt the house."

Despite the tornado's force, with winds surpassing 100 miles an hour, no severe injuries have been reported. WBIR noted the community's resilience and mutual support, as residents have not only been clearing debris but also cooking meals for those affected.

However, the need for volunteers stretches beyond the Sunbright city limits. The American Red Cross is actively seeking additional help, especially in Monroe County where they only have a modest team of four volunteers for such emergencies. During a recruitment event in Sweetwater, they managed to sign up only two more. "We’re running about every 10 days with a significant disaster in the US," said Christian Mcdonald to WVLT. Rebecca Woods, a prospective volunteer and social worker skilled in crisis management, remarked, "Just being able to be there when people are at that moment that they need a friendly face and calm voice and being able to go I’m here to help you and what do you need from me."

As recovery efforts continue, the call for volunteers remains open as the region looks to rebuild and strengthen its resilience against future challenges.
