"Empty the Shelters" Event in Fort Worth Aims to Relieve Animal Shelters with Fee-Free AdoptionsSource: City of Fort Worth, Texas

Fort Worth Animal Care & Control is joining forces with the BISSELL Pet Foundation for the "Empty the Shelters" event, where prospective pet parents are invited to adopt their new best friend from May 1 to May 15. In a bid to ease the overcrowding in animal shelters, adoption fees will be scrapped at all four FWACC locations, as reported by the City of Fort Worth.

The shelters, which include Chuck & Brenda Silcox Animal Care & Adoption Center and PetSmart Adoption Centers in Hulen and Alliance, are opening their doors to families looking to add a furry member. Each animal comes vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered. Not only do you get to enrich your home with love, but you're also giving these animals a second chance, while at the same time freeing up vital space for another in need. Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, articulated the urgency of the situation, "Our nation's animal shelters are facing a capacity crisis and need your help now," adding to how adoptions are down while owner surrenders have spiked, putting tens of thousands of adoptable pets in limbo, according to the City of Fort Worth.

The urgency of the situation is underlined by the participation of more than 410 shelters across 43 states in this year’s event, signaling a nationwide need for homes for these animals. The benefits of adoption cannot be overstated. Not only do new pet owners gain a loving companion, but they also make room for another animal to be sheltered, effectively saving two lives with one action.

Those interested in participating can join at any of the FWACC's locations, including the North Animal Campus, and are encouraged to view the available pets ahead of time. Full details can be found on the City News website, where available pets can be previewed and further information about the BISSELL Pet Foundation is available, people are encouraged to take this opportunity to bring a new pet into their homes, by doing so they contribute to a larger cause of preventing pet homelessness and the ensuing struggles these animals face when left unadopted.
