Family Still Seeking Justice One Year After UIW Student Fatally Shot in Selma, $60K Reward OfferedSource: X/Selma Police Department (TX)

One year has passed since the unresolved homicide of Joseph Banales, a young University of Incarnate Word student and cadet, who was tragically shot while driving on a Texas highway. As of today, the Banales family continues to desperately seek answers, with rewards totaling $60,000 for information leading to the arrest of the culprit, reports from KENS 5 and KSAT reflect.

The incident, which police believe to likely be a road rage shooting, occurred shortly before midnight on April 15, 2023. Banales had been en route home from a military ball when he was attacked on Interstate 35 in Selma. His vehicle crashed and he was found with a fatal gunshot wound to his head. Despite the lapse of time, Selma Police have yet to make an arrest, although they suspect the shooter to have been driving a dark sports car, likely a Nissan with a loud exhaust, detailed in a statement obtained by KENS 5.

"Life goes on for everyone. But for us, it stopped last year on April 15," Joseph's mother, Frances Szabo, told KENS 5. A palpable sense of loss and desperation marks her words, as she expresses the family's anguish over the impact of her son's murder, asserting that what has transpired doesn't affect just one person, but entire lives intertwined with the victim's.

Officials urge anyone with information regarding Banales’ death to come forward. The rewards offered include $5,000 from Crime Stoppers, a substantial $25,000 from the U.S. Army, and an additional $30,000 contribution from his family. The Selma Police Department, which can be contacted at 210-651-7813, partnered with several agencies to interview hundreds of witnesses, but as of this writing, a suspect has not yet been pinpointed, according to an update by KSAT.
