A tragic turn of events unfolded early this morning in Redondo Beach, where a motorist met their end in a single-vehicle crash along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Officials report that the incident took place roughly around 5 a.m. near Vincent Street, in the area known for its coastal views and busy traffic. Redondo Beach Police Department confirmed that the driver, heading southbound on PCH, somehow lost control and collided with a tree, as NBC Los Angeles reports.
The aftermath of the collision left the area ensnared in early morning chaos, "The driver of a vehicle traveling southbound on Pacific Coast Highway, lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree near the intersection of Vincent Street," relayed officials in a statement. Responding emergency services found the female driver unresponsive; she was subsequently declared dead at the scene by paramedics from the Redondo Beach Fire Department.
As a result of this unforeseen event, a stretch of PCH between Diamond and Emerald streets was closed, obstructing the usual flow of traffic and starting the day with a sobering reminder of the fragility of life. The identity of the woman behind the wheel has not been disclosed, and investigators have been tight-lipped about the potential causes that led to her losing control of the vehicle.
Scenes captured by ABC7's AIR7 HD show an absence of skid marks on the road near the wreckage, and earlier misreports of a pedestrian being involved have been corrected; confirming that the accident was isolated to the single vehicle and its driver. The investigation continues, as authorities work to piece together the moments before the crash and, it's hoped, prevent future tragedies on this well-traveled stretch of road.
