A man died from a neck wound after officers responded to reports of a fight in an alley in the 400 block of North Palm Drive late Sunday night, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department. A second man involved in the altercation, described by police as a Beverly Hills resident, was also injured and taken to a hospital for treatment. Investigators say they believe the incident was isolated, with no other parties involved.
Officers were dispatched at approximately 11:40 p.m. on August 30 after a report of an altercation involving two males in the alley south of Beverly Boulevard, according to Beverly Hills Police. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a wound to his neck. Officers rendered aid before Beverly Hills Fire Department paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The second man, hurt during the same incident, was also taken by paramedics to a hospital for treatment and evaluation, per the same release.
The location sits in the residential pocket of Beverly Hills known as the Flats, a stretch of multi-family condominiums and single-family homes between Santa Monica and Beverly Boulevards, according to the City of Beverly Hills. It is a quiet, largely residential stretch, not the kind of commercial strip where late-night disturbances are common.
Police Chief Vows Accountability
Beverly Hills Police Chief Max Subin, who was sworn in less than three weeks before the incident on August 10 after 27 years with the department, said detectives are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding what happened. Subin said officers responded quickly and rendered aid to both individuals involved. He added that the department remains committed to community safety and holding those responsible for violence accountable.
Subin succeeded retiring Chief Mark Stainbrook to lead a department of 154 sworn officers and 112 civilian staff, according to the Beverly Press. His arrival came with plans to expand the department's Real-Time Watch Center, which already integrates more than 3,500 security cameras, 120 automated license plate readers, and tactical drones across the city, the outlet reported in a separate piece on his priorities as chief. That surveillance network could factor into detectives' review of evidence from the North Palm Drive scene, though police have not said what footage, if any, has been recovered.
A Rare Killing in a City With Few Homicides
Homicides are exceptionally uncommon in Beverly Hills. Municipal crime reports and FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data recorded zero murders in the city throughout 2022, 2023, and 2024, according to OpenCrime. The city's last reported homicide before Sunday's incident occurred on January 16, 2026, near Wilshire and San Vicente Boulevards, when a suspect fatally beat a victim with a metal object and ran him over, as reported by CBS News. That suspect was later charged with murder.
Beverly Hills police also investigated a fatal stabbing following a dispute in September 2024, a reminder that arguments in the city occasionally escalate into deadly violence, according to a report from NBC4 News at the time. Should charges be filed in Sunday's case, a murder conviction under California Penal Code Section 187 carries a sentence of 15 years to life in state prison, with the possibility of life without parole or death if special circumstances are charged and proven, per the update BHPD released after the January homicide.
