Severe weather battered Metro Detroit on Wednesday, leaving a landscape of destruction in its wake. Uprooted trees, torn-off roofs, and downed power lines were just some of the aftermath reported by local sources. As gusts reaching nearly 70 mph pummeled the area, over 11,000 DTE customers and more than 400 Consumers Energy customers were plunged into darkness, according to FOX 2 Detroit and company outage maps.

Residents were left reeling from the storm's intensity. In Ferndale, the neighborhood near Nine Mile Road and Paxton Avenue was particularly hard-hit. An apartment complex had part of its roof severely damaged, prompting displacement among some residents. "Blew the roof off. I never seen anything like it," Cynthia Watkins, one of the building's residents, told FOX 2 Detroit.

The rapidity and ferocity of the tempest, with resident Laura Mitchum describing how she captured video of trees swaying violently as refuse bins were tossed across the lawns. "It came quick, and just like that, it was gone," she said in an interview with CBS News Detroit. In Washington Township, flying metal from a destroyed carport hit a family's home, further illustrating the storm's randomness and reach.

Meanwhile, business owners are grappling with the damage. Kifah Kashat, who owns an auto shop on 9 Mile in Ferndale, found his establishment missing its roof post-storm. His son advised him against coming to the premises because "Took the whole roof right off," Kashat recounted to FOX 2 Detroit. Elsewhere, in hard-hit Ferndale, the cleanup continued into Wednesday night with firefighters working alongside DTE to clear the debris and make the areas safe again.

Despite the large scale of the storm damage, there have thankfully been no serious injuries reported. The Ferndale Police Department confirmed only one minor injury that did not require hospitalization. For residents looking to check on the status of power outages, they can visit the DTE outage map and Consumers Energy's outage map through the utility companies' respective websites.
