Former Warren Police Officers Face Elevated Charges in Alleged Assault During Traffic StopSource: Google Street View

In a recent turn of events, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office has escalated charges against two former Warren police officers, Dammeon Player and Carlos Taylor, for their involvement in an alleged excessive force incident during a July 2023 traffic stop. According to The Detroit News, the officers are accused of assaulting a semi tractor-trailer driver in Center Line, a jurisdiction not their own.

Further investigation has led to Player's originally charged one-year misdemeanor of willful failure to uphold the law being dismissed, to only add misconduct in office—a five-year felony—alongside assault with a dangerous weapon. These developments come as the county prosecutor's office seeks to strictly hold accountable those supposed to protect and serve. As ClickOnDetroit reported, Player is slated to return to court on May 8th.

On the other hand, Taylor, who initially faced lesser charges for the same incident, saw his allegations ramped up with the addition of a five-year felony charge for misconduct in office, reported FOX 2 Detroit. This is on top of the initial charges of assault and battery, a 93-day misdemeanor, and willful failure to uphold the law as a public official, a one-year misdemeanor.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating categorically, "No badge grants immunity from accountability, and those who abuse their authority will face the full weight of justice." This is seemingly an effort to firmly establish that the law applies to all, regardless of rank or position. Player is expected to make his next court appearance on May 8, while Taylor is scheduled for June 5, both at the Centerline District Court.
