Fort Worth's nightlife received a dose of vibrant theatrics this weekend, as the Red Goose Saloon hosted the Moonlight Cabaret, an event that showcased an array of drag talent without the usual lip-syncing antics. Led by Salem Moon, the recipient of Fort Worth Weekly's Critic's Choice for Best Drag Performer of 2023, the show offered attendees a performance punctuated by live singing, humor, and entertainment.
The cabaret, advertised as suitable for patrons 16 and older, steered clear of risque material, instead opting for a more theatrical approach. The Dallas Express reported sparse attendance, with roughly half a dozen North Texans in the audience on Saturday night. Despite the controversies in Texas surrounding minor-friendly drag shows, which have been criticized by figures like West Texas A&M University president Walter Wendler, this event maintained a family-friendly atmosphere.
Alongside Salem Moon, performers such as Pysril Cybin, and Arsenic Aney took to the stage with numbers from hit musicals including "Hamilton," "Bare: A Pop Opera," and "We Will Rock You." Alcoholic beverages and themed menu items accompanied the performance, creating a well-rounded evening for those present. Notably, the event avoided the sexually charged energy of previous drag brunches at the same venue.
Following inquiries into the show's appropriateness for younger audiences and accusations of misogyny directed at drag culture, Salem Moon assured the Dallas Express that accusations of inaccurate coverage would be addressed. "DX has not been covering the shows at Red Goose Saloon accurately," stated Salem Moon, promising to relay concerns to Chris Hutchinson, owner of the Red Goose Saloon. Hutchinson has yet to respond directly to allegations or the show's content suitability.
For those intrigued by the concept of a live-singing drag spectacle, the Moonlight Cabaret is a notable addition to Fort Worth's diverse entertainment scene, proving that the realm of drag can indeed tread the boards of live vocal performance, while skirting away from divisive content.
