A deputy sheriff in Georgia was seriously injured early Monday morning during a high-stakes chase that concluded with a violent collision. Turner County's Deputy Nikolaus Herrick's patrol car was left mangled after it was pinned beneath a tractor trailer.

The pursuit, which occurred in the wee hours around 3:50 a.m., began when Deputy Herrick, during what should have been a routine traffic stop, found himself in a full-throttle chase that took a potentially deadly turn at the intersection of 8th Street and Love Avenue in Tifton. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Herrick's vehicle was completely demolished in the incident.

The suspects, in attempting to outpace the law, also crashed their vehicle a few blocks away, flipping their car, as witnesses told authorities. Emerging from the wreckage, they reportedly grabbed two duffle bags and fled on foot. Sheriff Andy Hester, in an interview with CDLLife, shared that Herrick “They had to extricate him from the vehicle, and they did and took him to Tift Regional Hospital, he was conscious and alert and in a lot of pain. He did have a broken rib, broken arm, broken bones in his face,”

Despite the severity of the accident, Deputy Herrick was reported to be in stable condition, having been urgently airlifted to a Macon hospital. In a bid to track down the suspects, “We did try to track them [the suspects] with a bloodhound, and we do have the vehicle they were in and we’re going to process it for fingerprints and any information that might’ve been left in that vehicle to determine who was in the vehicle.” Hester said, vowing to also process the vehicle left behind for fingerprints and any clues that might lead to the perpetrators' capture.
