In a swift move to fill a freshly vacated role, Gov. Jay Inslee has tapped David Schumacher, a veteran of state service with a record in management and budgeting, to join the University of Washington Board of Regents. Schumacher is set to take up the baton from Jeremy Jaech, who stepped down as regent on March 31, according to an announcement released by the governor's office.
Having devoted over three decades to public policy and fiscal oversight, the newly appointed regent began his bureaucratic journey at the state Department of Revenue in 1990, working there for three years. Schumacher then spent two years in the OFM's Forecasting Division and subsequently served the Senate Ways & Means Committee for over a decade, first as a member, and then as staff director from 2003. The Boeing Company snagged him for government affairs in the northwest region in 2008, only for him to return to the senate committee two years later, leading up to his current post leading the OFM.
"Once a Husky, always a Husky. I look forward to helping the University of Washington remain a top choice for students worldwide as a member of the board of regents," Schumacher stated. "It's an honor to take on this role. I am grateful to Governor Inslee for the opportunity."
Offering his accolades, Inslee underscored Schumacher's longtime dedication to his alma mater and his deep experience in financial management as assets that the board will now have at its disposal. "David brings a tremendous amount of talent and experience to the board of regents. His budgetary acumen and skillset as a manager will serve the university well," said Inslee, his passion for the University and commitment to public service, will enrich the board's collective wisdom. Inslee also gave a nod to Jeremy's 12 years of contributions, highlighting his technological expertise as a past boon to the board.
Schumacher, who holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from the University of Washington, will begin his tenure immediately. He resides in Olympia with his wife, Katy, and their two sons, stepping into his role as regent for a term that is slated to conclude on September 30.
