
A fatal police shootout erupted near FM 1960 following a traffic stop gone awry, leaving one suspect dead and a female bystander injured. The encounter began when Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to pull over a man who then refused to leave his vehicle. Despite having ample time to comply, the man drove off, initiating a brief chase that ended on 1960 & Ella when he engaged in a gunfight with officers.
According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office on X, the suspect had previously identified himself as a sovereign citizen and was believed to have two open felony warrants. After deputies failed to peacefully resolve the standoff, that lasted over an hour, they deployed spike strips to try and prevent his escape. Nevertheless, the man managed to quickly drive away, leading deputies to perform a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle.

The confrontation reached its climax when the man, armed with a semi-automatic pistol, got out of his car and began to shoot at deputies who returned fire, fatally wounding him. "The male was pronounced deceased on scene," the Sheriff's Office stated. During the exchange of gunfire, a parked vehicle was hit, and a 48-year-old woman inside suffered injuries. She was transported to the hospital, alert and conscious, and is expected to recover after undergoing surgery. Additionally, a school bus in the parking lot was struck by gunfire, however, none of the two adult occupants were harmed.
No deputies were reported injured in the shootout, with a sergeant and three deputies discharging their weapons during the incident. The Sheriff's Office has announced a thorough investigation to follow. "A total of four of our members fired shots; one sergeant and three deputies," confirmed the office. The incident had a ripple effect, striking fear into the community as it unfolded in a public area, underscored by the fact that a school bus was inadvertently caught up in the event, though no children were present at the time.
