A suspected serial jewelry thief accused of heisting more than $550,000 in gems has been collared, Houston authorities crowed. The burglaries, which began last year, ended with Marcelo Majeed Hernandez behind bars this month, the culmination of a persistent investigation by local law enforcement.
Deputies from Constable Mark Herman's Office initially responded to a David Yurman Jewelry store heist on October 13, 2023, where a masked bandit wielding a sledgehammer shattered the serenity of a quiet night and the store's front door before making off with over 200 high-end trinkets, the loot was staggering - worth over $380,000; nearly six months later, on April 5, a similar crime at Helzberg Diamond solidified the pattern in practice and palmed over $170,000 worth more in shimmering spoils.
A rigorous probe by deputies identified Marcelo Majeed as the suspect, and on April 11, 2024, they swooped in to make the arrest, recovering the lion's share of the pilfered jewelry. Authorities are still on the trail of a few missing pieces, according to a Facebook post by Constable Mark Herman's Office.
"Marcelo Majeed Hernandez was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail where he was charged with First Degree Felony Theft. At this time his bond and court information have not been set." a statement by Constable Mark Herman's Office.
