A weeklong manhunt culminated in cuffs as police nabbed the suspect in a deadly stabbing case from Houston's south side, officials said yesterday. Fifty-two-year-old Sean R. Smith stands charged with the murder of Dexter Burnett, 68, following an altercation that turned fatal in the early hours of April 7.
Officers discovered Burnett bleeding out in a dimly lit parking lot of a gas station on Cullen Boulevard; first responders tried to save him, but the wounds were too severe—the victim was later pronounced dead at the hospital, and the hunt for his assailant kicked off, HPD officers took statements and sifted through evidence at the chaotic scene, in their effort to piece together the grim events of the night.
After days of questioning and canvassing, the City of Houston News reports Smith was identified as the primary suspect, his image seared into the HPD's most wanted list until his arrest on April 13.
Smith, believed to have been the last person seen with Burnett, was picked up by Houston police on Saturday, he offered no resistance as he was taken into custody and escorted to Harris County Jail according to official reports, where he awaits prosecution in the 209th State District Court—a silent end to a week that began with violence.
