A Houston mother enduring the loss of a daughter to cancer has been dealt a fresh wound, this time at the hands of a brazen thief. Gabriella Mackin, who was tending to her daughter Alessandra's grave at Forest Park Cemetery, had her purse snatched from her car, sending her into a tailspin of identity theft and financial fraud. The purse contained not just her wallet and car keys, but something of irreplaceable sentimental value – her late daughter's driver's license.
According to a report by ABC13, the incident took place on Wednesday evening. "Who would do that?" Mackin asked during the interview, overcome with emotion at the gravesite. She was in disbelief, never expected to fall victim to such a crime in a place meant for peace and remembrance. "I always thought a cemetery would be one of the safest places," she said.
Mackin's story took a turn for the worse as she soon discovered the thief attempting to exploit her financially. A flurry of fraud alerts began to pop up within minutes, signaling unauthorized attempts to buy expensive gift cards and open new credit accounts in her name. The suspect, caught on surveillance video, was described as a woman in her mid-30s to early 40s, wearing a bright orange shirt, sporting long braids. Harris County Precinct 6 urged the public for any information leading to the suspect, highlighting that cemetery thefts, while shocking, are not as rare as one might hope.
"It's just the lowest individual, the lowest life possible, to steal from a grieving person at this cemetery," Mackin stated in an interview obtained by ABC13. To add insult to injury, Mackin's afternoon of grief was bitterly transformed into a struggle to secure her identity. She managed to lock down her cards via mobile apps, but the stress of the ordeal continues to weigh heavily on her.
FOX 26 further captured the despair of Mackin, noting her desperation mostly for the return of her daughter's mementos. "That’s all I have is the mementos because I do not have her anymore," Mackin revealed in a FOX 26 interview. Despite being consumed by grief and now financial turmoil, Mackin remains hopeful – clinging to the thoughts of her late daughter Alessandra and the strength she imagines her imparting from beyond.
