Police in Irvine didn't waste any time tracking down a suspected bank robber after he struck at a US Bank, with detectives arresting 57-year-old Irvine resident Mark Meng this morning in connection to the crime. Meng, now facing robbery charges, is cooling his heels in the slammer at Orange County Jail according to the latest update from the Irvine Police Department's social media.
The not-so-smooth criminal made his move on April 2, 2024, entering the bank on Barranca Parkway and slipping a teller a note that demanded a whopping $18,000. The teller handed over what was in the drawer – a far cry from Meng's request, a meager $446. Working tirelessly, the diligent detectives determined Meng as their prime suspect, said the Irvine Police Department
Evidence found at Meng's home following his arrest further cemented his connection to the heist. Meanwhile, the botched robbery attempt initially sent the authorities on a search for a male suspect, possibly Asian, standing about 5 feet 5 inches tall and tipping the scales at around 210 pounds, detailed by an original post from the Irvine PD. Donning jeans, a white baseball cap with "Callaway" inscribed, and sporting a "USA" emblazoned navy t-shirt, the suspect was also seen wearing a navy bandana, sunglasses, and blue surgical gloves to complete his less-than-discrete ensemble.
