Flames ravaged an approximately 40-foot boat at Berth 42 in the San Pedro area, prompting a hectic response from the Los Angeles Fire Department on April 4th. According to LAFD Alerts, the incident, coded INC#0862, broke out shortly before 2 PM and was met with a display of urgency as firefighters attacked the blaze by both land and sea.
The fire showed its fury, with heavy flames engulfing the watercraft as the LAFD arrived on the scene. A preliminary report indicated at least one patient required medical attention. The individual, however, did not need a rescue, which allowed firefighters to focus intensely on the containment and extinguishment of the flames. Fast-acting crews were dispatched, including "FS 48; Batt 6; South Bureau; Council District 15; BC6 BT1 BT2 BT3 BT5 E248 E285 E36 E38 E48 T48 T85" as per the statement given by the LAFD.
In a follow-up alert, the LAFD announced a successful knockdown of the inferno within an impressive 20 minutes. Firefighters' expertise in marine firefighting tactics proved vital in quelling the flames and preventing further disaster among other nearby docked vessels. Despite their swift action, the damaged boat eventually succumbed to the ravages of fire and water, sinking after the flames were doused.
The incident left an adult male and female with medical needs found off-site, away from the fire's reach. Both were tended to by paramedics and, although assessed, "both declined hospital transport," the LAFD reported. As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, the fallout of this unfortunate event is a stark reminder of the ever-present dangers that mariners and dock workers face regularly.
