An 18-year-old from Lowell, Massachusetts, found himself behind bars, facing charges tied to the armed robbery of a U.S. postal worker in Nashua, NH. Cops say the daylight heist was caught on camera and now Baraka Janvier has to answer for his alleged crimes in court. According to NBC Boston, the footage from a Ring doorbell shows two individuals—one believed to be Janvier—brandishing a firearm at a postal worker. The video helped to quickly track down the suspect.
Police managed to swiftly identify the getaway car used by the robbers, leading them straight to Janvier's doorstep. No one else has yet to be hauled in, but cops have their eyes on a few people of interest. Authorities are urging anyone who knows something to come forward, with a plea put forth by the Nashua Police, asking witnesses to call 603-589-1665. The suspects were reported to have made off with the postal worker's keys, but fortunately, the worker dodged physical harm, as noted by postal inspectors.
With lockdowns lifted and streets bustling again, the audacity of thieves seems to know no bounds, targeting letter carriers for their master keys—essential for gaining access into secured mailboxes. In a statement obtained by CBS Boston, local residents articulated their dismay, with Myrom Rodriguez-Nunez voicing his shock, especially considering the timing of the incident before a school bus was due to roll in. Neighbors of the cul-de-sac described the area as family-friendly, which only heightens the contrast of such a violent act in their peaceful enclave.
Such crimes aren't going unnoticed or unchecked, however. The USPS created Project Safe Delivery last year, stepping up rewards for anyone able to provide information leading to an arrest and conviction in mail-related crimes. The severity of the crime is underscored by the hefty penalty it carries—up to 25 years behind bars for armed robbery against mail carriers, according to the USPS. Meanwhile, the postal worker, who has been serving the neighborhood for years and recognized as kind and diligent, was unharmed in the incident. "For him to have to be put through that is scary," resident Joscelyn Cross told CBS Boston, after just recently moving in for what they thought would be a tranquil life.
Janvier is set to appear in court this Thursday afternoon, where he'll begin to face the music for the serious allegations pinned against him. As the community reels from the ripple effects of this crime, authorities continue their investigation, hoping to lock down any additional perpetrators involved in the harrowing ordeal.
