A man was shot dead by Harris County deputies following a high-speed car chase that ended in gunfire in northeast Houston this Tuesday, authorities have reported. According to KTRK, the fatal confrontation occurred after deputies attempted to pull over a vehicle believed to be connected to a suspicious altercation involving two other vehicles. The situation escalated when the driver failed to comply, sparking a pursuit.
During the chase, the fleeing vehicle crashed into a ditch on Bertwood Street, prompting its five occupants to flee on foot. As reported by KHOU, officers captured three suspects without further incident; a fourth suspect remains at large. The fifth individual was involved in a shootout with deputies, where he was struck by gunfire and subsequently died from his injuries at a local hospital.
The chase initially began after deputies responded to a call regarding a disturbance between a black Chevrolet Tahoe and a gray Chevy Malibu on Orange Grove Drive. The deputies spotted Malibu and attempted to pull the driver over, but the driver took off, stated Houston Police Department in a KHOU interview.
An intense search ensued in the surrounding neighborhood, with emphasis on a nearby elementary school which went into lockdown as a precaution. "We did a very thorough search with our air support and ground units. We weren't able to locate him, but at this time we don't feel that there's any threat to the public," Officer Guzman told KHOU. The lockdown was later lifted, with students being released as scheduled.
The weapon used by the deceased suspect has been recovered, and an investigation into the incident, including who fired first, is currently underway by the Houston Police. The two deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation's outcome; one of them has been with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for 10 years, the other for 11 years.
