A Michigan man with a criminal record has been charged following the shooting of a Good Samaritan in Ann Arbor, authorities say. Joshua Dye, 33, is facing a series of charges including assault with intent to murder and firearms-related offenses after the March 24 incident on North Main Street.
The victim, a 23-year-old military veteran and DoorDash driver, reportedly intervened to stop Dye from assaulting a woman, according to ClickOnDetroit. Attempting to escape the confrontation, the victim was chased down by Dye and shot in the upper body as he tried to get away.
Dye, who was arraigned on April 5, was given a $1 million cash surety bond. He reportedly yelled over police testimony during his bond hearing and has no fixed address. Ann Arbor Police Det. Brad Rougeau described the attack as "unprovoked" and emphasized that the victim's proximity to a level one trauma center likely saved his life. The information on the suspect's lack of a permanent address was obtained during his arrest by the US Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Task Force, as noted by the FOX 2 Detroit report.
In related testimony, Det. Rougeau pointed out that the incident could have been fatal, "Frankly, were it not for the fact we were so close to a level one trauma center, he might not be alive today," he told ClickOnDetroit. The incident which took place in broad daylight has caused significant injuries to the victim, including the need for multiple surgeries, as stated by the Washtenaw Assistant Prosecutor Alyson Robbins.
The suspect's criminal history includes a conviction for first-degree child abuse in 2009, along with a conviction for breaking and entering in 2023. In 2022, he had a malicious destruction of property charge that had several weapons charges dismissed, Robbins elaborated during the hearing. These details shed light on the suspect's past interactions with the law, hinting at a pattern of violent behavior.
The apprehension of Dye brought an end to a manhunt that began promptly after the shooting, detailed in a Hoodline report. The Ann Arbor Police Department has since continued their investigation, urging anyone with information to contact their Tip Line. The community’s help was instrumental in capturing the suspect, highlighting the pivotal role residents played in aiding the authorities.
