Minnetonka Man Fatally Shot, Four Deputies on Leave After Serving WarrantSource: Google Street View

A fatal showdown in Minnetonka has ended with a local man dead and four sheriff’s deputies on leave, per recent findings. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office disclosed the deceased as 28-year-old Clint Hoyhtya, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds during the April 10 incident.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) identified the deputies involved as Christopher Heihn, Tyler Jacob, Keith McNamara, and Steven Tomasko, all currently sidelined with standard administrative leave according to a BCA statement. Heihn and Jacob have eight years of law enforcement experience, each, McNamara has 23 years of service, and Tomasko boasts 15 years. All were responding to a felony warrant at Hoyhtya’s residence — though he was not the subject of the warrant.

The situation escalated when deputies arrived at the home to serve the warrant and Hoyhtya, reportedly armed with an assault-style rifle and wearing a tactical vest, opened fire as they announced their arrival and knocked on the door. The deputies, two of whom suffered injuries in the shootout, returned fire and then retreated to establish a perimeter around the house. Hoyhtya’s actions were met with a barrage of bullets that led to his untimely demise at the scene, as noted by BCA officials.

While McNamara was treated for shrapnel wounds on site, Heihn suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was hospitalized but has since been discharged, the BCA detailed. An assault rifle and dozens of cartridge casings were found at the scene, and the BCA is currently scrutinizing the body cam footage captured during the deadly exchange.

The investigation of the incident has been taken over by the BCA, by request of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, and upon conclusion, the findings will be turned over to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office without a charging recommendation for review.
