Drivers on U.S. 422 in Lower Pottsgrove Township should brace for construction disruptions starting next week. An $83.6 million overhaul by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) aims to redefine both travel and safety along 2.1 miles of this local expressway. The project includes bridge replacements between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road and is unfolding in Montgomery County, officials laid out on Thursday. Traffic hindrances are expected as PennDOT reconstructs shoulders, widens the roadway, and increases vertical clearance.

Beginning Monday, April 22, motorists will encounter a series of weekday lane and shoulder closures, as PennDOT sets out to permanently improve the expressway. Restrictions on eastbound U.S. 422 will initiate from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, stretching between Keim Street and Evergreen Road for shoulder work. Similarly, westbound travelers will have to navigate around closures between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard starting from 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The constructions scope extends beyond the main lanes; Sanatoga Road will also see a lane closure with flagging operations in place from Linfield Road to High Street, to facilitate the demanding task of bridge construction. The schedule indicates work there from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. These efforts form part of a larger strategy to revise U.S. 422's current alignment, enhance its horizontal curve radii, and ultimately to widen its shoulders. The importance of incorporating delays into travel plans cannot be overstressed, as varying degrees of commuter challenges are imminent.

PennDOT’s project also encompasses necessary controlled rock blasting activities that warrant brief, intermittent traffic stoppages, a mandate that will occur on April 24 through 26, between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. These will take place in both directions between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard, a necessary measure PennDOT asserts is "required for the protection of motorists and workers," as per the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Infrastructure advancements will see the replacement of the bridge over Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek, and culvert work around Sprogels Run, when motorists should be prepared to suddenly adjust travel speeds to ensure worksite safety.
