An altercation over a parking spot escalated into a hate crime arrest in Novato, CA. Douglas Shannon, 64, has been accused of threatening to shoot a neighbor and intimidating them with a call to immigration authorities based on their race. The incident, which unfolded in the Olive Avenue neighborhood on April 2, led Novato Police to take Shannon into custody, according to a report released by the department.
The dispute began with a disagreement on access to a parking space yet swiftly morphed into a scenario where the victim's sense of personal safety was jeopardized. Shannon allegedly took his intimidation tactics a step further by suggesting that the victim, whom he assumed to be an undocumented immigrant on account of their ethnicity, would be reported to government authorities. The Novato Police stated that Shannon was arrested for committing a hate crime and detailed that a legally owned and registered firearm inside Shannon’s residence was surrendered.
In the wake of the arrest, authorities obtained a Gun Violence Restraining Order against Shannon, effectively barring him temporarily from possessing any firearms, as detailed in a release from the police department. The order came about even though the gun was not utilized in the altercation with the neighbor. Shannon was booked at the Marin County Jail after the situation was defused, ensuring no physical harm came to any of the parties involved.
Novato Police have applauded the community for their swift reporting of the incident, reiterating their commitment to stand against hate crimes. "We would like to thank our community members for promptly reporting crimes like these," the release from the department read.
