PIO at scene gathering info. More to follow on this thread:
The tension peaked around 10:20 p.m. when Hollenbeck Division officers stumbled upon a car, abandoned in its haste in the middle of Fernandez Street, doors yawning open as though beckoning the officers towards the unexpected confrontation that lay in wait. Exploring the vehicle to investigate, officers encountered a male suspect, reportedly in his 20s, suddenly brandishing a handgun. In the anxious moments that followed, an exchange of gunfire pierced the night, though, fortuitously, the suspect was not hit.
While details remained sparse as the investigation pressed on, the streets echoed with the signs of the night's altercation. Shell casings and blue and red lights served as grim reminders of the narrow escape from what could have been a far more tragic outcome, as the suspect's gun lay silent, an echo of the violence that had failed to claim a life this time.
The LAPD has not released the identity of the suspect nor the names of the involved officers as of now. More information is expected to be released following a thorough examination of the incident.
