The hunt is on for Pennsylvania's most distinguished women veterans, as state officials kicked off the nomination period for a military honor that shines a spotlight on the achievements of female soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. The Governor's Advisory Commission on Women, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, is calling on the public to nominate women vets who've shown exceptional service and leadership for the upcoming Women Veterans Day celebration this June.
"It is a true honor to award these selfless women for their bravery and dedication to our nation," Moriah Hathaway, Executive Director of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Women said, according to an official press release. The commission annually acknowledges women from every military branch, and this year is no different. As the search commences for the next group of nominees, there's an air of excitement for the ceremony that highlights these trailblazers.
Currently, women make up the fastest-growing veteran group in the Keystone State, with their past roles in the military often breaking new ground in terms of rank and responsibilities. "In today’s armed forces, there is nothing women can’t do. Our female veterans paved the way for the women service members of today," Maj. Gen. Mark Schindler, Pennsylvania's adjutant general and head of the DMVA, emphasized in a statement obtained by the Governor's website.
To put forth a nominee, Pennsylvanians can fill out the online form—accessible to anyone with internet. Nominees must be current residents of Pennsylvania who not only served honorably but have also demonstrated their ongoing commitment to service and leadership in their civilian lives. But time is of the essence, with the April 29 closing in, potential nominators should get their submissions in pronto. More details and the nomination form are available at the Governor's Advisory Commission on Women's website.
