Two Perris men were slapped with attempted murder charges after a shooting that left one victim wounded last month, authorities said. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department identified the suspects as John Paul Hernandez, 37, and Chayanne Guzman, 21, both residents of Perris.
Deputies first got the call on March 20, when gunfire erupted on the 500 block of North Perris Boulevard. They found the victim shot up but alive, and their wounds thankfully weren't life-threatening. The victim was quickly rushed to hospital and is now in stable condition. In an effort to quickly apprehend the assailants, the Perris Station Investigators teamed up with the Robbery Burglary Suppression Team to take down leads.
According to an official release by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, the break in the case came when detectives caught up with suspect Hernandez on April 4 near 2nd and A Street in Perris. Following his arrest, a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 400 block of West 3rd Street. The sweep carried out by the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau, Perris RBST, and the Perris Gang Task Force unearthed evidence tying the crime to the site.
Not long after Hernandez's arrest, the second perp, Guzman, was nabbed by the Perris Gang Task Force in the area of Ellis Avenue and Highway 74 in Good Hope. While the investigation continued to unfold, it was revealed that additional information pointing to Guzman's involvement had surfaced, allowing authorities to promptly take him into custody to also face attempted murder charges.
Both suspects are now cooling their heels at the Cois Byrd Detention Center, waiting to face the music for their alleged roles in the shootout. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is keeping the doors open for more info that could help the case, urging anyone with a scoop to contact RBST Investigator Rooker at either the sheriff's dispatch or directly at the Perris Station.
