A Phoenix firefighter was the target of an assault while answering a medical call in the city's central area. The attack unfolded near the crossroads of 19th Avenue and Camelback Road, according to Phoenix police. Responding officers arrived to discover the assailant close to the scene.
The emergency worker, who has sustained minor injuries, was reportedly assaulted by a 45-year-old Jonathan Macias. FOX 10 Phoenix detailed that Macias is now behind bars, confronted with an aggravated assault charge. It remains unclear why the firefighter became the target of Macias's aggression, and the identity of the victimized firefighter has not been disclosed.
Recent events have put a harrowing spotlight on the mounting dangers faced by first responders. In the week prior, Phoenix police disseminated a pair of distressing bodycam videos showing instances where officers were similarly set upon.
One incident, which took place near Southern and 33rd Avenue, involved an armed robbery where suspects opened fire on an officer on March 29. The second assault occurred on April 7 at a gas station proximate to 17th Avenue and Bell Road and saw an officer suffer a stabbing. Both suspects, alongside a juvenile implicated in the robbery, were arrested as per 12 News.
