A Phoenix police officer was shot multiple times late Friday night following an armed robbery attempt, according to reports from local authorities. The incident, which police are describing as an "ambush," occurred near Southern Avenue and 35th Avenue in south Phoenix as the officer, working off-duty, was attempting to assist with what appeared to be a robbery of a parked vehicle.
Interim Police Chief Michael Sullivan did not hesitate to express his view of the situation at a news conference. "We had an officer who was violently attacked while truly doing his job and not just attacked but ambushed," Sullivan said, as FOX 10 Phoenix reported. The officer reportedly identified himself and was still in uniform when he was shot multiple times. Despite the chaotic scene, the officer never discharged his own firearm.
The suspects fled the scene before backup could arrive, leaving the officer to be quickly transported to a nearby hospital. He remains in stable condition. Sullivan emphasized the gravity of the crime and the determination of law enforcement, stating, "We will not rest. We will not stop until we hold them to account for their crimes. To the fullest of law," as detailed by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Residents in the area have been left shaken by the attack. A local woman, identified only as Yulanda, told 12News, "It's really sad you come out on a Saturday and see the heavy police presence." The incident has struck a nerve in the neighborhood, known for its family orientation, intensifying concerns for safety. "It's nerve-wracking. It's a lot of families out here. What do you tell your kids?" Yulanda said.
Phoenix Police are actively engaged in a manhunt and have expanded their search for the assailants. Chief Sullivan called upon the public's assistance for any information or video footage that may lead to an arrest. "I'm asking for anybody in the public who has any information about this crime, any cell phone video, any video from your business or home that can help us bring these folks to justice to share that with us," Sullivan urged. Those with information are encouraged to contact the Phoenix Police Department or to submit an anonymous tip to Silent Witness at 480-(WITNESS) or 480-(TESTIGO).
