A Red Lake man with a history of violent behavior has landed a nearly four-year prison sentence after a brutal hotel room attack, the U.S. Attorney's Office reported. Shawn Rene Lussier, 55, received 46 months behind bars for repeatedly punching and kicking another individual at the Seven Clans Casino on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in April last year, causing serious injuries including a lacerated scalp that required stitching.
The violent episode occurred late on April 9, 2023, where Lussier's savage assault not only harmed the victim but also resulted in over $450 in property damage to the hotel, leaving behind bloodstains in what turned into a crime scene, the U.S. Attorney's Office recounted. The 55-year-old, who has racked up multiple Tribal Court convictions for Criminal Domestic Violence and alcohol-related offenses between May 2017 to December 2021, now faces a stretch in federal prison after the sentencing by U.S. District Judge Michael J. Davis.
This conviction has landed Lussier a designation as a habitual offender, a term reserved for repeat violators who have shown a pattern of disobedience to the law particularly as it relates to domestic violence. After his nearly four-year term, he will be under supervised release for three years, which aims to prevent a recurrence of such violent acts.
The case was cracked by the collaborative efforts of the Red Lake Police Department and the FBI, and was brought to court by Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Bejar who handled the prosecution, his aggressive tactics yielded a conviction that will see Lussier behind bars for the foreseeable future. The announcement made by U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger puts a temporary end to Lussier's history of domestic assaults.
